Behind The Design

Get to know the processes behind your favourite clothing pieces with our Designers, Gillian and Ciara.

Ciara, Knitwear designer

Our renowned cashmere colours lead the clothing palette for each season so once those have been decided upon, we start researching ideas for the collection.

We get inspiration from all sorts of places including Founder & Creative Director, Victoria Stapleton’s travels, visits to exhibitions and any current trends. Every season, we also make multiple trips to Portobello in search of vintage prints and meet with Liberty of London to hunt through their archive of world famous patterns. Many of our prints have been re-coloured or re-worked to make them unique to Brora.

“I’m pretty obsessed with Fair Isle and love creating new patterns, often breaking the rules and using seven colours while traditional Fair Isle patterns only have five. My love affair started when my gran knitted me an Icelandic jumper for starting my first year at Art School.”

“The research stage, creating moodboards and putting colour palettes together is my favourite part of the design process. We go up to the mill in Scotland twice a year to pick cashmere colours for the season and normally take a bundle of inspiration.”

It’s always exciting to see samples of something we have designed for the first time and to see a collection coming together. We are proud to say we work with some of the best factories in the industry, creating timeless pieces which will last for years to come. From end to end, we work collaboratively with Victoria and our suppliers to ensure our clothing is of the highest quality.
